For more information please refer to DSLReports, a very good website devoted to information regarding DSL and DSL providers.  Also check out DSL Tips for more information regarding DSL in general.

As you'll see from the list below, most companies get their DSL connections from nationwide companies like Covad or Rhythms (@Link is locally run; not sure if they're locally owned).  This doesn't mean that all they do is resell.  Generally, you'll find that your Internet access (as opposed to your DSL connection) will come from the reseller as will your technical support and your bill.  In addition, the local ISP/reseller may be providing your web page and email so you should investigate those areas, too.

An area that is sometimes overlooked is the need for a firewall. This is a hardware or software device that protects your computer (or network) from Internet intruders. Some of the DSL providers provide basic firewalling; generally enough for a residential connection. Others give you a "clean" pipe directly to the Internet. You may need to invest several hundred dollars to install a firewall so that your network is secure.

Choosing the right provider: Decide what it is you want (e.g. static IP to run a server, multiple email pop boxes, lots of disk space included, dialup access) and then select the DSL provider who gets you closest to your wish list without exceeding your budget.
